Bob Vaughan, Amateur Radio operator/volunteer (1966-2019)

Robert Alan Vaughan, born January 15, 1966, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2019, after a year-long struggle with cancer. Among his many interests and pursuits, Bob was an avid amateur radio enthusiast, and was involved in a number of amateur radio contests and online discussion groups via his callsigns AF6RR and KC6SXC. One of his earliest volunteer opportunities was during the Oakland Hills fires of 1991, helping emergency responders with communication needs.

Bob attended our 2019 Mobile Command Center Expo in San Francisco and was eager to learn how he could support emergency communications as an amateur radio volunteer.

Bob’s interests also spread to photography and theatrical lighting and sound. He was a mentor to many in the South Bay theatre community, having been a fixture as a stage technician, master electrician, lighting designer, and sound designer at Palo Alto High School, West Bay Opera, TheatreWorks, Foothill College, and Opera San Jose, and later as an audio-visual technician at Stanford University and Santa Clara University.

We are very sorry Bob lost his battle against cancer and we remember his dedication to amateur radio as a support to emergency services. Bob is survived by his mother Barbara, brother Matt, and two nephews, to whom we convey our sincere condolences.

The 2019 (11th Annual) California Mobile Command Center Expo took place on a gorgeous, sunny day in San Francisco on April 18th. With more than thirty vehicles from local, county, state, military, and various non-governmental support agencies and equipment vendors, and several hundred attendees touring the vehicles and attending the many classes that were provided, we consider this 2019 event out best yet. Thanks to all the apparatus personnel, instructors, vendors, our visiting guests from Japan, the students and others who came out to the attend the Fire Dept’s Safety Fair, all the visitors and attendees – and especially to our hosts, supporters, volunteer helpers, and sponsors who helped make it all happen!

We’ve posted three galleries of images from the 2019 MCC Expo taken by our three photographers which should give you a wide-angle and close-up view of what we had going on this year. See the three menus at the top of our home page to view the images.

Golden State Communications ( has acquired this used Mobile Command Center which they will be displaying at the MCC Expo next week, with the intention of offering it for sale after the Expo is over. The unit is a plated registered 1996 Chevy with just over 18,000 miles on it. For full details, stop by the vehicle display area at the Expo on April 18 and have a look at this unit! Note: Any sale transaction must occur off grounds.

Pleased to report that, weather and activity permitting, CHP has arranged to have their aircraft overhead above the Expo site around 11AM during the event to provide a video downlink exercise for those MCCs with 6.5 Ghz receivers. The downlink will be on 6430 Mhz digital and in the clear. I think this will be a great opportunity to test your vehicle’s downlink capabilities. Vislink/IMT reps will be available at the CHP MCCC if any assistance is needed; they will also have a portable downlink receiver if you want to see how it works but don’t have one in your vehicle. Special thanks to Jeff with CHP Golden Gate Air Operations.
